Featured Speaker: Representative Tammy Baldwin

Representative Baldwin (D-WI) serves on the House Judiciary Committee and will talk about the need to keep the promises made in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. She is a strong supporter of voting rights, LGBT rights, rights of the disabled and has worked to end racial and ethnic profiling.

Carle Whitehead Awardee: Diana DeGette
The Carle Whitehead Award is given to a Coloradan whose life and work reflect a commitment to civil liberties and a devotion to human justice. 

Congresswoman DeGette will be receiving the Carle Whitehead Lifetime of Achievement Award for her work securing reproductive rights for all women, her efforts to ensure that vital stem cell research is funded in the U.S and her support of the rights of everyone to marry.

Sherman Awardees: Steve Zansberg and Chris Beall
The ACLU-CO presents the Edward Sherman Award in recognition of outstanding legal work on behalf of furthering civil liberties.

Attorneys Steve Zansberg and Chris Beall worked as a legal team defending free speech during the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

steveSteve Zansberg represents news media organizations in seeking access to judicial proceedings, records and open meetings, libel defense, asserting the journalist’s privilege against being compelled to testify, and conducting pre-publication review and counseling. He also litigates and counsels clients in use of copyrights, trademark, trade dress and protection of trade secrets. He is listed in the First Amendment category in The Best Lawyers in America and Who’s Who in American Law.

Chris Beall represents news media organizations and others in libel, trademark, false advertising, copyright, public access and other related First Amendment issues. Mr. Beall’s recent trademark and copyright litigation has included a successful two-day preliminary injunction trial in Denver, Colo., for 5280 magazine in a trademark dispute regarding its mark “5280.” In addition to Mr. Beall’s intellectual property work, he also has represented news media clients and others in access litigation for more than a decade, helping to obtain public access to everything from police internal affairs reports to recordings of illegally conducted meetings of public bodies. He also was part of the legal team that represented the news media during the Kobe Bryant rape case in Eagle, Colorado, including the prior restraint litigation in the Colorado Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.
