  • Our membership has quadrupled in the last six months, making it possible to do more than ever to protect civil rights and civil liberties in Colorado. Thank you to all our new members, supporters, and donors, and the ones who’ve been with us for years.

  • Leisel Kemp, whose brother Jason was killed by CSP after they entered his home without a warrant, spoke at the 2013 Bill of Rights Dinner about the ACLU’s legal advocacy on behalf of her family.

  • Out of Sight, Out of Mind is an original short film from the ACLU of Colorado about a man who has spent 17 years in solitary confinement and now suffers from debilitating mental illness.

Get Out the Vote! Lakewood

Voting is one of our most basic rights, but it’s meaningless if we don’t take the time to make our voices heard.

Help us remind people to go vote this November. We’re joining forces with the Colorado Civic Engagement Roundtable and New Era Colorado for several Get Out The Vote (GOTV) and ballot education canvassing events. Volunteers walk neighborhoods, knocking on doors reminding people to vote and letting people know about the ballot initiatives they’ll be voting on. These initiatives include Amendment 62, a "personhood" amendment that would give full constitutional and legal rights to fertilized eggs. The ACLU of Colorado actively opposes this Amendment, and we hope you’ll get active with us this fall.

Additionally, canvassers in Lakewood will be spreading the word about the Lakewood Vehicle Impound Initiative, a measure similar to the Denver Initiative 300 that was defeated in 2009. The Lakewood Initiative would require police officers to impound the vehicles of anyone driving without license or registration, even if the driver forgot those items at home. The ACLU of Colorado opposes this initiative because it will encourage racial profiling, eliminate due process protections, and waste public resources. Read more about this dangerous ballot initiative on the Coloradans for Safe Communities website.
