First Amendment
Freedom of speech is protected in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights and is guaranteed to all Americans.Since 1920, the ACLU has worked to preserve the freedom of expression, right to dissent, as well as the right to assemble, protest, and petition. We also work for the preservation of student speech, the internet as a free speech zone, and the upholding of the First Amendment—even when it comes to unpopular speech. The ACLU of Colorado has defended free speech as it relates to city sign codes, parades, and a student’s off-campus internet postings. We’ve also defended student journalists threatened by school administrators, and a student who wished to wear a “NObama” at a political rally. In advance of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, we filed a groundbreaking lawsuit against Denver and the Secret Service seeking to protect the rights of those who wished to express their views about issues of public concern during the convention.
