Right to Petition the Government

The right to speak out about government’s abuse of power or its failure to act is at the crux of the First Amendment’s protections.

The ACLU of Colorado has challenged law enforcement intimidation and arrest of peaceful protestors in numerous cases over the year. Notable highlights include litigation over the State’s regulation of demonstration permits and parade routes leading up to the Democratic National Convention, and revealing the existence of the Denver Police Department’s “Spy Files,” kept on peaceful demonstrators and activists.
