When the Teller County Jail told inmates that they would not be allowed to have “certain religious articles or diets,” the ACLU of Colorado stepped in to defend the rights of prisoners to observe their religion. The ACLU had received a complaint from a prisoner who requested but was denied a religious diet. After the ACLU of Colorado wrote of letter of inquiry, the jail indicated that it would revise its policy. The jail now gives inmates proper notice that they may request and receive an appropriate religious diet while in the Teller County Jail.
