DENVER– “The ACLU of Colorado applauds Governor Hickenlooper for rejecting fear-driven governing and for protecting refugees fleeing terror and persecution in Syria.
“Our freedom erodes when we trade our values for fear. The U.S. has long been a leader in refugee protection and resettlement and needs to show courageous and bold leadership now.
“As the Governor rightly explained earlier this week, the U.S. refugee system is extremely rigorous in security checks and screening. All refugees must pass background checks conducted by multiple U.S. agencies before finally being approved to travel to or settle in the U.S. In fact, refugees are the single most scrutinized and vetted individuals who travel to the U.S.
“It is un-American to condemn entire groups because of their skin color, ethnicity, national origin, or religion. We are proud that Colorado will continue to be a leader and a safe haven for the men, women, and children who seek shelter and protection in our state.
