Shawn is a coach/consultant with over 24 years of experience in addressing health equity and non-profit management. An expert in health equity, Shawn has worked with the following populations on health equity projects in Colorado: African-American, Hispanic, Spanish-speaking Latino, LGBTQ+, Native American, people with disabilities, and rural populations. Shawn also has experience in various aspects of nonprofit management, including Board training and development, fundraising, executive coaching, evaluation, capacity building, providing technical assistance, and major gifts. He has worked with governmental entities, universities, hospitals, foundations, and corporations.
Previously Shawn was the Development Director at the Colorado Prevention Center and the Project Manager for the Centers of Excellence for Culturally Competent Care at Kaiser Permanente Colorado. Shawn is known for his systemic approach to addressing health equity and for his work with boards and staffs, which strengthens their ability and willingness to lead their organizations. Shawn has built a strong reputation and has an excellent history of volunteerism across the State of Colorado. He has extensive experience in working with physicians, researchers, and clinic staff conducting clinical trials at the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine. He also has experience gathering patient information, representing minority organizations at meetings, and attending to other tasks/projects addressing health equity. In addition, he has extensive experience in addressing anti-oppression, systemic and structural racism, and unconscious bias.
Shawn has a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from Ohio University with a focus on health policy, a Masters of Gerontological Studies (MGS) from Miami University with a specialization in chronic diseases, and has taken post-graduate leadership training at Duke University. He also has a certificate in fundraising management from the Fund Raising School at Indiana University. He completed the Regional Institute of Health and Environmental Leadership (RIHEL) program. He is a current commissioner for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE)’s health Equity Commission and a member of Arapahoe County’s Board of Health. Previously he was a commissioner for the Denver Office of Strategic Partnerships (DOSP), former board member of the Colorado Council of Black Nurses, a former member of the Colorado Office of Physical Activity and Nutrition (COPAN), Colorado Cardiovascular Health Coalition, and numerous other organizations across the State of Colorado. He is the former state liaison between the CDPHE’s Cardiovascular Health and Diabetes program and the African-American community.
